Mary Martin Gallery (www.mmgnaples.com) – located at 365 5th Avenue South, Suite 101 in Naples – invites the public to an opening reception of photographer Michael Kahn’s newest works on Friday, February 17 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. His exhibit will be on display at the gallery through the end of February. Please call 843.830.0887 to reserve pieces in advance.
Born in 1960, Kahn is a life-long resident of Chester County, Pennsylvania. During his childhood, his family summered on the coasts of Maine and Topsail Island, North Carolina. This is where his love of the sea and sailing originated. After high school, Kahn apprenticed in a portrait studio where they used Hasselblad cameras with a square 6×6 cm film format. Here, he received hands-on training in film handling and black and white printmaking. In the mid ‘90s, Kahn took his first sailing photograph of a small boat in the fog on a lake in the Adirondacks. This image launched his nautical photography career. Kahn made the decision to stay with his film cameras instead of going with the new trends in digital equipment, and continues to make handmade photographs in his darkroom. With his 1950s camera, Kahn travels extensively to photograph the world’s finest boats and pristine seascapes. He collects his images on traditional black and white film and produces luminous silver gelatin prints in his darkroom. With a distinctive sense of composition and attention to tonal relationships, the emotional force exhibited in Kahn’s photographs has allowed him to be one of the most memorable photographers of our time.
Kahn’s stunning seascapes and sailing photographs are exhibited in art galleries and museums around the world and his works are also held in both private and large corporate collections, such as McGraw Hill, Liberty Property Trust, and MBNA Bank. Kahn has been profiled and his images showcased in prominent magazines and newspapers such as National Geographic, Architectural Digest, Classic Boat, Sailing World, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and ForbesLife.
