The Garcia Opera Lineage, Pauline Viardot

In part one of the Garcia Opera Lineage, we learned of Manuel Garcia, the Spanish tenor and vocal pedagogue, who fathered two of the great divas of the 19th century, focusing on Maria Malibran. Part two is a discussion of Malibran’s younger sister, Pauline Viardot, who became one of the most influential and popular opera singers of the second half of the 19th century. Pauline Viardot was also a composer, pianist and organist, and she used her great influence to help launch the careers of several of the most famous composers of her day, including Gounod, Faure and Saint Saens. Viardot’s mentorship and friendship with the famous Russian author, Ivan Turgenev, is legendary.

“The Christians” presented by Gulfshore Playhouse

The Christians by Lucas Hnath will be presented by Gulfshore Playhouse April 29 through May 21, 2017.

Pastor Paul has worked for 20 years to build a church from the ground up. What was once a modest storefront is now a congregation of thousands with all the amenities he could have ever imagined and more.  And finally, after many years, the church has managed to pay off its debt. A day of celebration turns into so much more as Pastor Paul delivers a sermon that will shake the foundations the church is built upon. Step right into the pulpit for The Christians, an intimate play asking epic questions about faith and its power to unite or divide us.

Reynier Llanes Solo Exhibition

The final solo exhibition of the Harmon-Meek Gallery’s 54th Season welcomes Reynier Llanes to the Harmon-Meek Gallery. Llanes was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba in 1985.  He attended the city’s school of art for four years and completed his studies in 2004.  In Havana, Reynier Llanes was tutored by one of the country’s most recognized realist artists, Juan Miguel Suarez. In 2007 Llanes grabbed an opportunity to emigrate from Cuba and moved to the United States.

In 2011 Llanes was awarded a “first purchase award” for a work now in the art collection of the city of Charleston, South Carolina.  His art is on permanent exhibition in the museum collection of Franklin G. Burroughs- Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC.  He is in the collection of the Snite Museum of Art in South Bend, Indiana and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.

Reynier Llanes moved with his family to Miami in 2015 and has had solo exhibitions at Miami-Dade College West in Doral and will have an exhibition at Northwestern State University in Louisiana in May.

Llanes states “I am drawn to rural environments that afford a sense of space and silence and an opportunity to unobtrusively observe daily functions of others as we all pursue life’s mission of work, love, and belonging.  Agrarian life allows me to experience how we work in harmony with the mysterious and changing fabric of nature.  It is the small, but critical tasks of daily life that I find most stimulating and reflective of the quality of essential, personal, community and social values.”
